Best salute possible

On Nov. 7 I had the honor to be in a ceremony at Eastern Elementary school to package candy the kids collected on Halloween. It’s to be sent to our troops overseas along with donated personal items. I and four others from the VFW Honor Guard were there to receive the gifts.

We were so overwhelmed with what these kids, teachers, helpers and administrators had done. I tried to tell my wife about five kids giving me big hugs. I hardly could speak, plus all the handshakes we received.

If you can picture this, I’m giving those kids the best salute I could possibly do.

Global action needed

Typhoon Haiyan, the strongest storm ever to make landfall, struck the Philippines on Nov. 8, days before the United Nations Conference on Climate Change began in Poland. In opening sessions, the lead delgate from the Philippines, Naderev “Yeb” Sano, announced his intention to fast until significant progress is made in the talks. He fasts in solidarity with his countrymen, who struggle to survive without food, and to communicate the urgent need for global action on climate change.

Shortly after his speech - alongside many individuals and churches globally - we began daily sunrise-to-sunset fasts to support Mr. Sano’s stand. We will continue to fast until progress is made or the conference closes (Nov. 22). Funds not spent on meals will be donated to typhoon relief.

As citizens and parents, we share deep concern about the present and future impacts of climate change. While we all volunteer on the climate issue in a variety of ways, this is the first time we have fasted as part of an effort to inspire community action.
