Judged by treatment

Dr. Rolf Peterson, a renowned scientist and wolf expert, has nailed the problem, i.e., it’s all about politics. We are dismayed by the possible extinction of tigers and elephants but fail to look in our own backyards where prairie dogs are poisoned, bison, wolves, cougars and bear are shot or trapped and mustangs are rounded up and sent to slaughter. Now we have trophy hunting.

As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

It is my hope that the trophy hunters and politicians will soon take up permanent residence in the hottest part of Hades with a wolf controlling the thermostat.

Wise up

The Nov. 13 Forum article against hunting wolves by Rolf Peterson is a propaganda piece. It says that “politicians and special interest groups” created excuses to kill wolves. Well, the “excuse” is that there are three times too many of them (wolves, not politicians, well, er ...) and they need to be culled. Next, he claims that putting the decision as to whether or not to have a legal hunt into the hands of professional wildlife managers was dishonest and a perversion of democracy. The decision was reached through the legislative process; the dishonesty is in a potential referendum financed by rich out-of-state interests, specifically the Humane Society of the United States.

Wolves are different from other wildlife species? How? They are predators, smart, dangerous predators, that’s how.

I recommend to the author, and to readers, “Wolves in Russia” by Will Graves.

The well-heeled gun lobby? Hogwash. The so-called gun lobby is composed of normal citizens, not D.C. millionaires.

Not hunting wolves serves the public interest? By encouraging the comeback of large, smart, predators that we spent thousands of years driving into the deep wilderness so they can’t eat us?

Wise up.
