n To more than 20 volunteers from Boardman River Clean Sweep and the Traverse Area Paddle Club and staffers from the Grand Traverse Conservation District for removing wreckage from docks and decks and other large debris that was swept down the Boardman when a temporary dam gave way last year. The volunteers spend two days in June pulling about 23 pieces of large refuse from a six-mile stretch of the river.

n To the Michigan Legislature for (finally) agreeing to a program that will help low-income Michigan residents pay their energy bills and avoid a shut-off. A small charge will apply to all customers, starting in September, unless a utility opts out. The Michigan Public Service Commission says only a few so far have declined to participate. The money will be distributed by the state.

n To those who donated their time, money and labor to build a paved, illuminated path at the Northwestern Michigan fairgrounds. Six-year-old Ezekiel “Zeke” Goodwin died last year after he was struck by a pickup truck while he rode along a dirt road at the site. An archway stretches over the new path - intended to keep kids and vehicles apart — and is adorned with the name “Zeke’s Way.”

n To Boy Scouts Troop C436, made up of scouts from northern Lower Michigan, who spent two weeks in West Virginia at the 18th National Scouting Jamboree. The scouts did Class 5 white water rafting on the New River and then made camp at the Summit Bechtel Reserve near Beckley, W. Va.

n To 51-year-old Cathy Nagler of Rochester, Minn., who learned to swim at her family’s summer cabin in Northport, who swam the 5.8 miles across the Straits of Mackinac in 2 hours and 40 minutes. She wore a lightweight wetsuit, and dive boots to ward off hypothermia. She was accompanied by a support boat, her two daughters, a coach and doctor.
