---- — Marquee question

Those who are interested in preserving some small semblance of health and civility in Traverse City will find Paul Bogard’s newly published book “The End of Night” an important contribution when considering the proposal for the Bijou marquee.

Shame on the R-E

The Sept. 8 editorial railing the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners was almost laughable if it weren’t so sad how our local newspaper seems to have a real vengeance for board member Melinda Lautner.

As I read the article I was sensing the R-E using “bullying” tactics, with journalism as its tool. And, for one reason, Ms. Lautner supports a smaller government ideology.

The board is “considering” withdrawing from the Council of Governments, a government agency that provides workforce development, economic development, and regional planning services.

If the board decides to withdraw, the R-E says “a new start-up business wouldn’t get help to learn how to use social networking tools like Twitter or Facebook.” Start-up businesses would have to find it, and pay for it. Really? Bring in any child over the age of 10 and they’ll teach you all you want to know, for free.

But the R-E’s attempt to dissuade the board (if they should decide to withdraw) by suggesting Leelanau residents would not have access to Michigan Works database is simply a lie. Michigan Works is open to any Michigan resident seeking employment.

R-E, shame on you.
