- To the Northwestern Michigan Colleges Associate Degree in Nursing Program for celebrating its 50th anniversary. The first graduates of the program were recognized at a reception and dinner. Class of ‘63 nurses also will be recognized at the NMC Barbecue May 19. Les Biederman spearheaded the creation of the nursing program.

- To Vic Herman and Amy Reynolds, who 20 years ago relocated Horizon Books to its current location in downtown Traverse City, making it the anchor for the now-thriving east end of Front Street. Many credit their decision to expand into the former JC Penney building downtown with that transformation.

- To teacher Jody Mackey and her Traverse City East Middle School students for taking the top prize in the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association’s annual contest, MIPA’s coveted Spartan Award, the highest honor for student media outlets. Mackey and 30 students air a newscast once or twice a week.

- To the Betsie Valley District Library in Thompsonville, which broke ground last week for a new 1,500-square-foot facility, thanks largely to a donation from the Wayne and Joan Webber Foundation. Construction is expected to be complete in October.

- To the Lake Michigan Conference, which will be providing green ribbons for athletes to wear at spring events as a show of support for league member Grayling after an accident killed senior golfer Louis Menard and golf coach Jason Potter. Some 1,000 green ribbons will be distributed to league schools. Grayling’s school colors are green and white. A similar effort is being promoted by state high school golf coaches.

- To Donna Hornberger, who received the Grand Traverse-Leelanau-Antrim Bar Association’s Liberty Bell Award. Hornberger is president of the League of Women Voters Grand Traverse Area, president of the Peninsula Community Library Board of Directors and vice-president of the Third Level Crisis Intervention Center Board of Directors. She is a former president of the Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society.
