To those who returned a a “ghost bike” to a memorial to Traverse City bicyclist Kelly Ann Boyce, who died after being hit and dragged by a vehicle July 5. Kelly’s mother Michelle Boyce recently noticed the “ghost bike” had disappeared from the memorial. A note said it had been removed after complaints from neighborhood residents. The bike was returned Sept. 5. The family hopes to maintain the memorial until winter and keep the ghost bike at the site until whoever struck her is apprehended.

n To the Edmund F. and Virginia B. Ball Foundation of Muncie, Ind., which is donating $325,000 to various efforts, including: $75,000 to an effort to “daylight” Kids Creek near Munson medical center; $20,000 to the Inland Seas Education Association; $100,000 to the Virginia B. n To local stonecutter and jeweler Kevin Gauthier, owner of Korner Gem in Traverse City, who was featured in a recent New York Times article as one of about 10 jewelers in the nation using “fordite,” which is made up of layers of dried paint baked to rock hardness over time. The material came from the automotive industry when cars and trucks were spray-painted by hand; “over-spray” accumulated color by color in painting bays and had to be periodically scraped off and removed. Cut and polished, it rivals the look of jasper or agate.

n To the 470 individuals on 68 different teams who volunteered their labor to make this year’s United Way of Northwest Michigan Day of Caring the biggest yet. Groups undertook a variety of tasks from working on a food pantry to building a pasture shelter and pathways at a therapy ranch. It’s not too late to volunteer, as some projects are still under way.
