Legacy will be felt

The thoughtfully written June 23 piece on Bryan Crough’s memorial service at the TC Opera House touched on the essence of this wonderful man and his myriad contributions to our community and the wonderfully diverse people who comprise it.

Bryan’s partner, Todd, spoke so eloquently and so openly about their lives together that those in attendance found themselves helplessly laughing and weeping at the same time.

In the end, this was a bittersweet celebration honoring the passing of a truly special human being whose presence and legacy will be felt in our community for years to come.

Called to answer

On Jan. 14, 2012, an article on the trespass and wanton destruction of trees on our private property in Glen Arbor in order to improve the view of Lake Michigan for a few Homestead condominium owners raised community awareness and more than a little concern.

You might be interested in the outcome, and perhaps it will give hope and encouragement to others who may have trees vandalized in such a manner, be it for view or firewood.

We decided the apology of “I made a mistake” and “I didn’t know where the boundary line was,” was not something we could accept. Looking at the remains of the 22 trees strewn about — the mess was impossible to remove without destroying the fragile hillside — we, as victims, knew we had to see this through.

With the help of attorney John Grogan and much time and effort, the conclusion was that both the Hawk’s Nest Condominium Association and Bob Ihme of Glen Arbor Outdoor, paid a substantial settlement for their involvement.

By informing the public, perhaps other would-be vandals will consider their actions knowing that they can and will be called to answer for them.
