A Christian nation

The United States was founded as a Christian nation. The first sentence of the Mayflower Compact is, "In the name of God, amen." The Compact continues, "Having undertaken for the glory of God and advancement of the Christian faith ..."

The Constitution was dated "the seventeenth day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty seven ..." The form 1787 A.D. was not used. Our framers wrote it out, clearly acknowledging Jesus Christ as Lord.

Pastor David Walls and the First Congregational Church lived their faith when they refused a prayer to the Muslim god, Allah. The church could not allow a prayer to a foreign god at the altar of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Muslim extremists have killed our soldiers in the name of Allah. How can we expect our veterans of Iraq, Afghanistan and the Fort Hood killings to sit through a prayer to Allah?

The church was right

The controversy about the Veterans Day concert performed at First Congregational Church in Traverse City is undeserved, and the record needs to be set straight. The church negotiated in good faith to bring in a Muslim congregational leader from Grand Rapids to sing the Muslim call to prayer at this concert. So what really happened that is not being widely reported on by the media?

The Muslim congregational leader requested that he be allowed to speak for five minutes about Islam to the audience from the church's pulpit and pass out copies of the Koran. That being the case, the church was right in not allowing proselytization of a different faith in its sanctuary. It is very disappointing to read so many letters passing judgment and condemning First Congregational Church without knowing all the facts.
