Boy who loved bees

A couple of decades ago a second-grader walked into my Suttons Bay School office to sell a jar of honey.

As principal, I tried to honor student entrepreneurs.

But this kid was different. He was not sent by adults. Bees were his business. Name any month and he could tell you exactly what was happening in the hive. He knew what they ate, what they needed and how they worked together to make their little world the best place possible. The boy loved bees.

Time moved on, and so did I. I heard he married his high school sweetheart, had three children and became a professional beekeeper.

Recently, while driving some hives south for the winter, my 27-year-old former student was killed in an auto accident.

If you read the reactions, you know that this boy, this young man, was an old soul.

He connected with farmers, with fun-loving young friends, with family and children, and deeply, deeply connected with this wondrous Earth.

Thank you, Jeremy — your positive passion has done, is doing, more good than you will ever know.

Step back from the cliff

It strikes me that our next end-of-the-world event, the so-called "fiscal cliff," may be just another Y2K hysteria created by our nation's slick propagandists hard at work in their "think tanks."
