Do the right thing

Traverse City’s commissioners should keep fluoride in the city’s water supply. It’s worth the money and it is worth standing up against the anti-fluoridation crowd.

As a periodontist, I see firsthand the effects of fluoride in terms of cavity prevention. Many people of the Baby Boomer population who comprise the bulk of my patients did not have fluoride in their water as children. They have usually lost a few teeth and have numerous root canals and fillings. The younger generation generally has healthier dentitions. But please don’t rely on my anecdotal account. There are many large public health epidemiological studies that prove fluoride’s benefits in reducing dental disease in children.

Adding any chemical to a city’s water supply is an important matter. I am hopeful that our leaders will follow in the footsteps of city officials who came before them and do the right thing and keep fluoride in Traverse City’s water.

Has the experience

Jerry Cannon is running for Congress in the 1st District as a Democrat. He has strong feelings on creating jobs, protecting Medicare and Social Security and giving the middle class a fair shake.

He is a progressive on education and rural health care. His experience in the military, law enforcement, and as Kalkaska’s sheriff are pluses as is his experience as an elected official.

I urge you to support Jerry Cannon, an outstanding individual to represent Northern Michigan in the November election.
