Misleading rhetoric

After Porter Abbott aptly described misleading rhetoric used by climate skeptics (May 4 Forum), Sen. Marco Rubio provided us with more examples. On This Week ABC the Senator denies links between climate change and human activity, purporting that laws to reduce emissions will have no effect, except to “destroy our economy.” Watch the language, as Abbott cautions: Sen. Rubio reduces the massive body of published scientific evidence about climate and mitigation to a “notion.” His statement that “what they have chosen to do is take a handful of decades of research” is outright distortion. Climate scientists consider changes over long periods of time, often centuries. When Sen. Rubio alarms us with his prediction that carbon legislation will “destroy the economy” he offers no studies to support his belief. Rather, he ignores studies that indicate carbon reduction and renewable energy will actually help the economy. Addressing the National Press Club, the Senator calls himself a “policy maker.” Isn’t the job of a policy maker to use the best information available in the interest of one’s constituents? Rubio’s constituents will be among the first to experience devastating effects from rising sea levels. Hopefully, Floridians are paying close attention to their Senator’s words.
