n To the U.S. Supreme Court for backing federally imposed limits on smokestack emissions that cross state lines and burden downwind areas - like Frankfort in Benzie County - with bad air from power plants they can’t control. The 6-2 ruling was seen as an important step toward controlling emissions from power plants in 27 Midwestern and Appalachian states that contribute to soot and smog along the East Coast.

n To those honored by the Northern Michigan Environmental Action Council at the group’s annual awards dinner, which is intended to recognize groups and individuals for work that has a positive impact on the environment. This year;s environmentalist of the year award went to Don Cunkle, who founded Recycle-A-Bicycle about eight years ago.

n To Marcia Price, a mother of four and Elk Rapids’ first female Village Manager. The 61-year-old Price, an accountant by trade, has been Village Clerk since 2004. She agreed to take the “interim manager” job last year after the long-time manager resigned. But she eventually accepted the full-time job while retaining her position as clerk.

n To the Traverse City Commission for approving an engineering contract to connect Garland Street in the warehouse district to Union Street near the Traverse City Visitor Center. City officials want to update existing designs to completely reconstruct the street. The idea has been talked about for years and planing has been going on since 12007, officials said. The aim is to better connect the Warehouse District to downtown.

n To Traverse City Central High School yearbook students whose writing, design and photography received top honors from the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association. The school’s 2013 yearbook, titled “Depth,” won the Gold award at the MIPA journalism contest against 35 schools entered in Traverse City Central’s division. The award is second only to the Spartan award, which goes to the top book each year.
