Cheers: 04/21/2014

- To Matthew Failor, 12, a seventh-grade student at Traverse City East Middle School, and William Kalajian, 13, an eighth-grade student at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Middle School, who finished second and 10th respectively in the Michigan National Geographic Bee at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. Failor just missed a chance to represent the state at the national Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C. The competition is designed to encourage the teaching and study of geography.

- To Suttons Bay’s Bingham District Library for bringing in Wilson, a certified therapy dog to help children read. Wilson and his owner Sarah Schultz are a certified therapy team. They worked primarily in nursing homes in Raleigh, N.C., but Schultz wanted to focus on children when she moved to Suttons Bay in September. Children of all ages sere able to sign up for 15- or 20-minute one-on-one reading sessions with Wilson over the weekend. Schultz hopes to offer the program once a month.

- To owners Paul and Amanda Danielson and chef Myles Anton of Trattoria Stella for The Franklin, a restaurant that will open in a new building at Front and Cass streets. The team behind the Franklin want to further nurture the region’s food culture. The building, by Keen Technical Solutions, is one of the most modern and energy-efficient buildings in the downtown.

- To the Sleeping Bear National Lakshore, which is about to begin work on the second section of the paved Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, a planned 27-mile pathway. The new segment, which officials hope to have open by summer, will go through the national park from Empire to Glen Arbor. The Park Service says the trail provides mutli-use capabilities; design standards and its width will make it easier for families on bicycles to move throughout the Lakeshore.
