Housing effort working

I would like to take a few moments to share optimistic news about homelessness for the Grand Traverse area, despite federal Department of Housing and Urban Development data released last year that indicated roughly 350 people are homeless in the five-county area.

Northwest Michigan Supportive Housing (NMSH) is the only local nonprofit organization that makes its mission housing homeless individuals and families with mental health needs in Permanent Supportive Housing. According to the Corporation for Supportive Housing, supportive housing results in tenants’ decreased use of homeless shelters, hospitals, emergency rooms, jails and prisons. NMSH boasts a 92 percent success rate (meaning the rate of people that stay in housing).

Over the last 13 years, the Greater Grand Traverse Area Continuum of Care (of which NMSH is a member and grant recipient) has been awarded from the federal government upwards of $14 million in funds to direct to local organizations serving the homeless.

The Grand Traverse community should be very proud of itself, the work of the Continuum of Care and NMSH. As a community we are setting a great example.

Not far enough

After seeing an anti-Obamacare ad on TV from “American’s for “Prosperity” here is what I sent Congressman Benishek.

“Saw the advert on TV from a Koch-roach group to contact you if I oppose Obamacare. So, here I am.

“Yes, I oppose Obamacare. It does not go far enough in eliminating health insurance death panels from determining the care I receive. The U.S. needs to modernize like other industrial nations and implement single payer, putting a stake through the hearts of health insurance companies once and for all time.
