To JohnPaul Morris of Traverse City on winning the grand prize of this year’s Traverse City Film Festival bumper contest. His 62-second paper animation film will be seen by nearly every movie-goer during the ninth annual festival next week. He also took first place honors in 2011 and won third place in 2010

n To Cathy Nagler, a Northport summer resident, who swam across the Mackinac Straits from Mackinaw City to St. Ignace on July 25.

n To Elaina Campbell, 13, of Blair Township, who received a 24-foot-diameter swimming pool this month as a gift from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Elaina has suffered health problems since birth. She was diagnosed with Roberts Syndrome, a rare bone deficiency, and craniosynostosis, a birth defect that causes the soft spot on a baby’s head to close before it should. She underwent brain surgery for several aneurysms in 2010.

n To Father Ciprian Streza, parish priest at Archangel Gabriel Greek Orthodox Church, his parishioners and others involved in creating a community garden on church property near Acme.

n To the Institute of Sustainable Living, Art and Natural Design (ISLAND) for helping the Mancelona Community Garden get a fresh start.

n To Skylar Thompson, a 2013 Traverse City Central High graduate for her perfect attendance records though all 13 years of her K-12 education and her 4.0 grade point average. A member of the National Honor Society, she also was involved in band, orchestra, debate, track, and Central’s advanced science, math and technology curriculum. The overall goal wasn’t perfect attendance, she said. “The goal was really to do well in school. Perfect attendance made that possible.”

n To Scott Craig, a retired documentary maker and Interlochen Public Radio contributor for his new book, “The Story Next Door,” a compilation of more than 40 stories he has told about area residents on his IPR radio show of the same name. Craig now has told more than 70 stories on the radio series that airs on IPR at 8:30 a.m. the first Friday of the month and a 9:05 a.m. repeat show on the following Saturday.
