But not last night

As the summer tourism season is about to begin in our area, it is an appropriate time to question the ideology of the State of Michigan regarding our fresh water resources.

On one hand we have Pure Michigan touting the abundance and clarity of our lakes, rivers and streams. Then, on the other hand, we have a foreign gas exploration company applying for a permit with the Department of Environmental Quality to extract natural gas from our area through hydraulic fracturing that may use up to 300 million gallons of water, which will never be reclaimed and appears to be collateral damage from this controversial method of extraction.

All this while a recent media blitz from the oil and gas exploration industry tells us that fracking is good for us, reliable, safe and even patriotic.

To quote my friend, Mickey Redmond, “I was born at night, but not last night.”

Veterans for Peace

Richard Thibeau, Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Cherryland Post, should be ashamed. Our local branch of Veterans for Peace has this great idea to honor returning vets, and Thibeau says no, “It’s not the message, it’s the messenger.” So political.

Veterans need all the honor and support we can give. Shoving a welcome sign into a corner of the baggage pickup area is lame. What, the VFW didn’t think of it first, so they’re mad? Labeling Veterans for Peace in such a disparaging manner should be enough to remove Thibeau from his commander post.

Leah Bolger, President of Veterans for Peace, spent 20 years on active duty in the U.S. Navy and retired at the rank of Commander. She is a full-time peace activist. For Thibeau to call her a “criminal” is ludicrous. She’s a “criminal” like Martin Luther King Jr. was a “criminal.” Both speak openly for peace.

If there’s one message veterans return with, it’s “War is not the answer.” Violence perpetuates violence. If Thibeau uses playground bullying behavior with such pride, he should go back to school and learn how to communicate

Bravo to Veterans for Peace.
