Editorial: Cyclists need to be seen

An older gentleman called the other day to say he worries when he sees bicyclists who are hard to spot, day or night, because they’re wearing dark clothing and their bikes lack reflective gear.

On too many bikes, he noted, the only reflector is mounted under the seat and is hard to see.

It would help if cyclists wore or decked out their bikes with some red or orange to stand out, he said.

Even bikes going from sun to shade on tree-lined streets can be hard to see without a little flash of bright color.

He’s right. Not everyone wears light clothing and fewer still wear something reflective, like a vest.

It’s good advice from someone who wants cyclists to help themselves be seen.
