Who controls market?

If my facts are correct, we are the second-largest oil producer in the world, soon to become the first; we have enough oil so that for the first time in 40 years we are exporting oil. Our gas prices are at near record levels, and the oil companies are making record profits. What about the rhetoric that more drilling for oil in the U.S. would solve the high price problem? Do the oil companies control the market and the stock prices?

Denounce the pacifists

So at last the veterans have a welcome home sign at the airport. It shouldn’t have been an issue. But people in the peace movement know what lies behind Mr. Thibeau’s harsh, inaccurate criticism of the Veterans for Peace — it is the belief of war advocates that peacemakers are unpatriotic. War advocates seem to believe that government actions should be open to criticism except when that action is going to war.

“Naturally the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”

— Hermann Goering, Hitler’s Reich-Marshall, during the Nuremberg trials.
