To Kyle McLelland of Fife Lake, who has turned his love for fishing into a business, The 17-year-old Forest Area High School student guides fishing trips during the summer and on weekends during the school year. He has appeared on a few outdoor TV shows and has gathered corporate sponsors. He has worked for an area guide service and guided trips in the Upper Peninsula. He intends to launch a full-time career guiding fishermen.

n To the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy which, with a $15,000 Coastal Zone Management grant from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and a matching gift from the Huckle Family Foundation, is working to chart a route along the Chain of Lakes leading to East Grand Traverse Bay. The trail is designed for small, non-motorized boats including kayaks and canoes.

n To the Michigan Legislature for approving a bill that will give bicyclists another way to signal a right turn. The bill will give bicyclists the option of signaling a right turn by extending their right arm horizontally. They currently can signal a right turn by extending their left arm upward, a signal in effect since shortly after World War II.

n To the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy for hosting a “Coastal Shipwreck Story & Hike” over the weekend. Maritime historian Jed Jaworski was to tell the story of the wreck of the Marinette and other Arcadia-area coastal shipwrecks. Participants were to then hike to the Marinette shipwreck site at the north end of Arcadia Dunes.

n To Traverse City West Senior High School’s Thespian Society, which is hosting Haunted Hayrides in the the woods at Black Star Farms. The rides are 10 to 15 minutes long and will be staged from 7 to 9:30 p.m.; the last rides are scheduled for Friday and Saturday. The rides are recommended for those 12 and older.
