- To the League of Women Voters Leelanau County, which was formally recognized by the national League last month. The Leelanau League previously existed as a unit of the League of Women Voters of the Grand Traverse Area. The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that fosters informed political participation through education. The Leelanau League has 80 members.

- To the Federal Aviation Authority for $3.2 million in grants for airstrip lengthening at Cherry Capital Airport. The longer airstrip will allow commercial jets to run fully loaded with passengers; in hot weather, up to half a dozen passengers can get bumped to reduce weight. The grant will reimburse Cherry Capital for a portion of the $4 million project, which it began with local funds.

- To the Inland Seas Education Association for offering a two-day program for high school-aged young men to conduct hands-on, experiential research projects related to the ecology of Lake Michigan during a two-day sail. The Young Men in Science program will be held August 15-16 and begin in Petoskey and end in Suttons Bay. Call 271-3077 to register or for more information.

- To Forest Area Schools voters who approved a five-year millage renewal by just eight votes. Voters in Grand Traverse and Kalkaska counties approved the five-year, 1-mill millage renewal 186-178. The tax levy will generate about $129,000 annually for the district’s sinking fund. The current sinking fund millage expires this year. Since it was a renewal, the overall tax rate won’t increase.

- To the Traverse Area Association of Realtors and two other real estate associations for launching a new multiple listing service known as the Northern Great Lakes Realtors MLS. The site allows users to search property listings in the Grand Traverse, central and northeastern Michigan regions, making thousands more listings from across the state available to users.
