First impressions

In Mexico, where I lived for several years, houses are commonly surrounded by 10-foot adobe walls. Inside the garden patio behind those walls a peaceful oasis can be found, even in the midst of a busy city.

If I lived on Division Street, I'd want to build such a wall in my backyard, with little concern about the "impression" this might give to tourists.

By the time they've passed the gauntlet of gas stations, chain restaurants, motels and "big box" stores approaching Traverse City, it's probably too late to worry about first impressions.
