‘Wet house’ good idea
As downtown residents we are glad to see progress being made on the possibility of a Traverse City “wet house.” Dann’s House, as it is being called, is something that is needed in our area. We know it was proposed in November 2012 with limited support. We hope with the reintroduction of the idea, new team members and the grant from Rotary Charities that it can move from concept to actual implementation in a timely manner.
We feel those who are homeless due to mental illness, substance abuse, etc., deserve to have a safe place to stay year-round. In addition to helping the homeless our research indicates that communities that use this approach are able to provide better care for these individuals and in a more cost-effective manner.
We hope the city commission and the community fully support this effort.
Keep Open Space open
The open space should be just that -— open.
And why should a religiously-themed festival, with the explicit goal of promoting their religion, be permitted to use public space? Do they not have their own religious space to use for this purpose?
Our voices have been drowned out by those wishing to promote themselves at the expense of the public. This has nothing to do with “locals vs. tourists,” economics or anything other than a lack of determining and setting the priorities of our community.
