Regulations don’t apply

In his Aug. 22 letter Mr. Wills’ attempts to justify the improper display of the American flag at the Discovery Center by quoting Chapter 8 of the U.S. Naval Telecommunications Procedures for Flags, Pennants & Customs, NTP 13 (B), Section 801b.(4) seem incorrect.

Rear Admiral A.F. Campbell writes these customs were developed and promulgated for use by U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. They don’t apply to any other organization. Mr. Wills’ reference includes “Section 801b (4).” Section 801 is part of section 800 which specifically addresses “Display of the National Ensign at U.S. Naval Shore Activities,” which does not apply to the Discovery Center. Unless you’re on a Naval or Coast Guard installation the recommendations contained in NTP-13 do not supersede United States Flag etiquette.

I am not sure why the Discovery Center appears to be so obstinate on this matter. By flying the “Discovery Center” flag in a higher position than the American flag, the Discovery Center continues to disrespect the flag, the people of the U.S., the veterans who have fought and died for our freedom and the citizens of this community who financially support the Discovery Center.

There’s no problem?

Senator Barack Obama’s thoughts on the debt ceiling in 2006: “The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.”

Now President Obama says there is no problem even though our per person debt bill is $53,000-plus.
