Look inward

This addresses Mr. Charles Knapp’s March 20 letter regarding poverty.

I find his comments disturbing as well as inaccurate. I believe he mistakes “liberals who don’t want people off assistance” with compassionate individuals who care about others and recognize their need. Consider our communities and nation without assisting those who are less fortunate. Ethically, it is simply the right thing to do.

One or more factors can be responsible for poverty - citing poor choices and attitudes is simplistic and judgmental.

Mr. Knapp and those of similar thought, I ask that you, look inward, seek compassion and ask, “What would Jesus do?”

Are you fatigued, anxious, depressed, constipated, lost ability to smell, have pain, small handwriting, restless legs and sleep? These are early signs of Parkinson’s that appear before motor symptoms such as tremors.

In the U.S. one person in 100 over the age of 60 will be diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disorder. Young onset Parkinson’s, classified before the age of 50, is increasing with diagnosis in their mid 20s and earlier.

There are 85,000 Vietnam veterans diagnosed with Parkinson’s and 2.8 million exposed to Agent Orange. Parkinson’s is a progressive neurodegenerative multi-system disorder with uncontrolled physical movements and neurological problems that require an innovative approach to daily living. There are no lab tests to determine the presence of this disorder; diagnosis is empirical with no known cure.

Parkinson’s Network North is a 501c3 organization that has actively served Traverse City and the five-county area for 29 years. Our support groups are supportive and educational. We collaborate with Parkinson’s Action Network, the political entity of Parkinson’s, Michigan Parkinson’s Foundation, Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, Michael J. Fox Foundation research and Veterans Affairs.
