Worth the price

With all the bicycle accidents and near misses, I would like to encourage anyone who rides in Traverse City to add one very important piece of safety equipment to their bike: a rear view mirror.

I have avoided many possible crashes by watching diligently for traffic coming up behind me and moving out of harm’s way.

Please consider, the cost is minimal and if you avoid just one mishap it will be worth many times the price.

Vets, know benefits

I had the privilege of accompanying a World War II veteran on this week’s U.P. Honor Flight mission to Washington, D.C. - an experience I will never forget.

These veterans, like all who have served in the United States Armed Forces, deserve our gratitude and respect. They also deserve the assurance that their needs will be met, regardless of what phase of life they are in.

Spending time with those 75 Upper Peninsula veterans, hearing their stories and watching them experience our nation’s capital reminded me of how important our obligation to our veterans is, and how important it is that our veterans are making use of the benefits and services available to them.

I encourage all veterans, as I encouraged those on the flight, to make sure they get to know all they are entitled to, including health care, pension and aid and attendance benefits, among others.

If you or someone you love has served in the armed forces, there may be many benefits and services available to you. Contact the County Veterans Service Officer in your community or call the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency at (517) 284-5298 to learn more.
