To the Traverse City Central High School Symphony, which has been invited to play at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., in March. Music teacher Ellen Boyer, who has been teaching music at Central for 16 years, said students will participate in theCapital Music Festival, a four-day event for high school orchestras. Fundraisers have been organized to gather the $1,000 per student cost. To donate, go to www.tcaps.net/ csh/AthleticsPerformingArts/ Orchestra/tabid/ 2549/Default.aspx or e-mail Boyer at: boyerel@ tcaps.net.

n To the joint Traverse City/Garfield Township Recreational Authority, which oversees the $1.5 million development of Historic Barns Park, for choosing to install a geothermal well system designed to heat and cool the Cathedral Barn. It is the first of what supporters hope will be several Energy Farm projects at the 56-acre urban park at the Grand Traverse Commons.

n To the Shell gas station in Manton, which sold a $1 million Powerball ticked for the Sept. 7 drawing. An assistant manager said players are flocking to buy tickets in hopes of having their own good luck. As of last week no one had come forward to claim the prize.

n To Traverse City native Dick Swan, who has invented an inflatable boat that doubles as a paddle board. The 70-year-old Swan said he started the project from scratch a year ago. The design for the Airborn inflatable boat has already drawn interest in the boating industry. It has a hard inflatable base boaters can stand on to paddle or fish. It can be rowed and a small motor can be mounted on the back.

n To Kitty Bucholz and retired teacher Sherry Day, who were reunited at Horizon Books for the first time in 30 years as Bucholz dedicated her first book, “Little Miss Lovesick,” to Day, her sixth-grade teacher at Kalkaska’s Birch Street Elementary school. “She was the first adult besides my family who laughed at my stories and encouraged me,” said Bucholz.
