Editorial: For Elmwood, 1863 a very good year

On Dec. 21, 1983, the nation was more than three years into the Civil War. On Nov. 19, President Lincoln had delivered a speech at a battlefield in Gettysburg, Pa., that he predicted the nation would “little note nor long remember.”

It was a memorable day for Leelanau County in what was a memorable year. The county, which had been laid out in 1840, was formally organized that year. And on Dec. 21, Elmwood Township was formed.

Elmwood is planning a year of activities to celebrate its 150th birthday, which were to kick off with a small open house Saturday at the former Norris Elementary School on M--22 at Cherry Bend Road. Harvey Norris, a direct descendant of one of the two prominent families associated with the township’s founding, was to attend,

Other events planned through 2014 include a family ice fishing contest on Cedar Lake, a boat show at the township marina, an old timers’ baseball tournament, youth sailboat races, sponsorship of the Scottville Clown Band in the Cherry Royale Parade during the National Cherry Festival and, possibly, a beer and wine festival.

Township Supervisor Jack Kelly said the township is working on a web site to highlight the year of events.

Even after 150 years, there’s a lot happening in Elmwood, and 2014 and beyond promise to be busy times. Maybe not as momentous as 1863, but that one would be hard to top.
