Beware the camel

In the early ’60s when my father testified before Congress in opposition to the proposed National Park, he began with the following, “From experience, the Arab knows that if he allows a camel to get his head inside the tent, it won’t be long before the whole camel is inside and the Arab outside.”

While the park became a reality, albeit greatly smaller than originally planned, I can honestly say that my father would approve of the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. Because of the diligence of the National Park Service, our area remains unspoiled by intrusive commercial enterprises blotting our hillsides, meadows, and forests. The park has guaranteed the natural beauty in perpetuity.

In addition, property owners and township planning commissions have worked together to write ordinances maintaining this intrinsic character and protect property values. Our watershed — hillsides, forests, meadows, as well as bodies of water — is fragile, and its protection needs diligent attention or it will disappear. Zoning already in place provides that. The proposed air walk in Kasson Twp. does not provide anything not already available and could have irreparable repercussions.

Let us not let the camel into the tent.

Don’t call back

If you receive a phone call from a phone number that you do not recognize, don’t call that number back out of curiosity. I received several early morning calls from a number beginning with 268. I did a Google search of the number, which came from an area code in the Caribbean. I found out via the internet that these hang-up calls come from scam artists in foreign countries.

If you call the number back, you don’t have to give out any personal information to get ripped off. A huge charge which goes to the scammer will be added to your phone bill, in addition to the phone company’s charges for an overseas call. If you contact your telephone provider, you may be able to get international calls and third-party charges to your account blocked, which will prevent you from being charged for this type of scam.
