- To four area high schools — Traverse City West Senior High School, Leland Public School, Traverse City Central High School and Benzie Central High School — which ranked among the top public high schools in Michigan, according to nationwide rankings. TC West was ninth in the state, Leland 20th, TC Central 21st and Benzie Central 37th in U.S. News & World Report’s list of top high schools in Michigan. The rankings were based on student performance in math and reading math and reading scores for minority and low-income students and student scores on advanced placement and International Baccalaureate tests.

- To a team of Northwestern Michigan College Entrepreneurial Micro-Business students who, to fulfill a course requirement of starting their own business venture founded MAD (Making A Difference) Cherries for Charity, a public art event that runs through May 19. The aim is to raise money for the Women’s Resource Center, Third Level Crisis Center and Freedom Builders. For information visit

- To several local law enforcement agencies which participated in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day April 27. Residents were encouraged to drop off their expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs at sheriff’s departments in Antrim, Benzie, Leelanau, Kalkaska and Grand Traverse counties.

- To the Northern Michigan Environmental Action Council for holding its 25th annual Environmentalist of the Year Celebration. Sixty-three people were nominated and 19 received awards for their accomplishments furthering environmental awareness or causes. The evening was dedicated to NMEAC founders Bob Russell and Sally VanVleck. Russell is battling stage four esophageal cancer and they could not attend.

- To Old Mission Peninsula wineries for unanimously participating in a voluntary state program to minimize agricultural pollution and comply with environmental regulations. Gov. Rick Snyder attended a media event at Brys Estate Vineyard and Winery when the seven established Old Mission wineries were honored achieving Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program verification.
