Benson is best choice for Sec. of State

For Secretary of State, we recommend Jocelyn Benson.

It's not often voters get a chance to cast a ballot for someone as qualified as Benson, the Democratic candidate. She teaches election law at Wayne State University, is a member of the American Bar Association's Standing Committee on Election Law and wrote "State Secretaries of State: Guardians of the Democratic Process," an overview of the best practices of secretaries of state from across the country.

Benson has vowed to strictly uphold state election law, closely monitor campaign contributions and make the process more transparent. She also will advocate for early voting and easier absentee voting and two-year license plates.

It's a sea change from the recent past and the kind of fresh thinking Michigan so needs.

Republican Ruth Johnson opposes early voting and doesn't appear ready to toughen campaign finance enforcement.

Jocelyn Benson is by far the best qualified.
