No clear choice for Attorney General

----

---- — The Record-Eagle has chosen to make no recommendation in the race for Attorney General.

Republican Bill Schuette has been on the government payroll since 1984. He has served in Congress, was named Director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture by Gov. John Engler, served in the state Senate and in 2002 was elected to the Michigan Court of Appeals.

Democrat David Leyton served 12 years on the Flint Township Board of Trustees and was elected Genesee County Prosecuting Attorney in 2004 and re-elected in 2008.

The Schuette-Leyton campaign has been brutal; a newspaper columnist called Schuette's effort the "vilest, most awful campaign" this year.

Neither man has made a case for being the state's top law enforcement officer.
