-- To St. Francis High School, part of Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools, which was named to the Catholic High School Honor Roll for 2008, joining 49 other schools from across the country. The honor roll is part of the Grand Rapids-based Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty. Michigan tied with Texas for the largest number of schools, six, on the list, compiled for the fifth straight year. It was the first year St. Francis applied.
-- To the State of Michigan for launching a new winter tourism campaign in Chicago and other Midwest markets. The expansion of the state's award-winning "Pure Michigan" campaign will include television, radio, print and billboard advertising that highlights activities during Michigan's winter season. State tourism officials said it's the state's first winter advertising campaign in more than 15 years.
-- To the hundreds of Grand Traverse County residents who took advantage of an electronics recycling program last weekend sponsored by Grand Traverse County Resource Recovery and Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan. The great majority of participants were dropping off old televisions and computers.
-- To Benzie County resident Gary Gonyon Sr., who recently turned over to 95-year-old Rena Fuller two embossed, gilt-edged leather photo albums he found in a dump more than 40 years ago. John Repp, a retired Ford Motor Company engineer and genealogy buff, linked the albums to Fuller, who is living in a Frankfort retirement home. Gonyon recently visited and gave her the albums.
-- To David Frazier, a disabled Vietnam War veteran who, with his wife Gloria, created Fire Base Independence at his home in Mancelona as a place where disabled veterans can gather to talk or work on a variety of projects, including woodworking, small engine repair, carpentry and other hands-on projects. Frazier said he knew first-hand that boredom and isolation are a toxic combination and began the program.
-- To Traverse Area Community Sailing, which officially unveiled its new Hull Park boathouse on Boardman Lake at Hull Park near the Traverse Area District Library. The Gordon and Jean Cornwell Sailing Center is named after Traverse City residents Gordon and Jean Cornwell, longtime supporters of the community sailing program. Community Sailing is a partner in the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation Access to Recreation at Boardman Lake Project.
-- To the Betsie Valley Library for receiving a $16,400 donation from the Wayne and Joan Webber Foundation in memory of Mr. Webber's parents, Chris and Therese Webber. The funds were allocated to purchase an array of children's classics, educational books, high school- and college-level classics, large-print editions and laptop computers.
