-- To the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings for again holding their fall training camp at the Centre ICE complex outside Traverse City. The team arrived Thursday, and the four-day training camp officially began Saturday morning. A Red-White inter-squad game is scheduled for Tuesday evening. The National Hockey League's Prospects Tournament, held last week, drew crowds of more than 1,000 fans a day. The Wings bring thousands of fans and hundreds of thousands in tourist dollars to the area every year.

-- To the Grand Traverse Heritage Center for holding popular walking tours of Central Neighborhood and the downtown area. The tours began in 2003 and grew out of walks conducted by the late Joe Kilpatrick, a retired school principal who spent time researching and writing about the city's history. The center conducts two tours a week -- at 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Saturdays. Tours are $10 per person; make reservations at (231) 995-0313.

-- To Travel Michigan, the state's tourism agency, for bringing two dozen travel writers from around the U.S. and beyond to destinations across northern Michigan. Journalists spent several days in the region to acquaint themselves with attractions, cultural institutions and recreational opportunities. Writers visited Leland, Omena, Glen Arbor, the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, Boyne USA, Shanty Creek and the Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas.

-- To the Grand Traverse Heritage Center for bringing back Family Heritage Day last week after a two-year hiatus. The event is intended to give a firsthand look at life in the region from the days of the first European trappers to a 1910 pioneer kitchen. Representatives of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians also participated.

-- To local businesses hosting a winter coat and clothing drive to help needy families. Skilled Manufacturing Inc., Master Dry Cleaners, Two Men and a Truck and radio station 106 KHQ are collecting "gently used" or new coats and clothing from today through Oct. 24. Coats and other winter clothing may be dropped off at Skilled Manufacturing, 3680 Cass Road in Traverse City, or any Master Dry Cleaners location.

-- To the Cherry Capital Cycling Club for hosting the 25th annual Leelanau Harvest Tour, a noncompetitive bike ride over the weekend. Cyclists pedaled 15, 25, 45, 67 or 100 miles, pausing at food stops. The number of riders is rising, with about 1,000 taking part last year. The 2007 ride raised $17,000 for TART Trails.

-- To the American Red Cross of Northwest Michigan for holding a coin drive to raise money for hurricane relief efforts in the wake of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in Louisiana and Texas. The goal is to raise at least $32,000 over the next several weeks.
