---- — NORTH MUSKEGON — Vera P. Campbell, age 101, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at the home of her niece, Nancy Gray in North Muskegon, Mich. She was born on Sept. 16, 1912 in Hawkins, Mich., to parents Elmer and Edna (Packard) Hatch. She was the oldest of eight children, all of whom preceded her in death.
Vera graduated from Muskegon Heights High School and worked as a secretary for the Muskegon Board of Realtors. She married Justus (Jim) Balcom on Aug. 8, 1933. They resided in the Muskegon area and he passed away on Sept. 11, 1956. She married Alex Campbell on Dec. 2, 1963, and she moved to the South Torch Lake area where she resided until her death. Alex preceded her in death on April 27, 1995.
She enjoyed hunting, fishing, and reading. She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 9, in Muskegon. Vera was blessed with a very large extended family and she remained in close contact with all of them into her late 90’s. Despite impaired vision and hearing, she lived independently until the last three months of her life. She will be missed by many friends, acquaintances, and family members.
A funeral service will take place at 11 am on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013 at the Covell Funeral Home, 312 Pine St., Elk Rapids MI 49629. The family will receive visitors at 10 a.m. prior to the service. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 9 or your local Hospice organization.
