Vernon 'Buck' Lewis Jewell

INTERLOCHEN — Vernon “Buck” Lewis Jewell, 91, of Interlochen, passed away peacefully on Oct. 4, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Buck was born on March 3, 1922, in Grand Traverse County, to the late Lewis and Camille (Kreml) Jewell.

He honorably served in the United States Army in World War II.

On Oct. 10, 1942, Buck married the love of his life, Vada Elaine Lance, in Buckley. They celebrated 71 wonderful years together this year.

Buck was a hardworking dairy farmer throughout most of his life.

After the farming years were over they moved to Green Lake for part of the year and wintered in sunny Florida. In his spare time he enjoyed watching baseball, deer hunting, fishing and playing golf. He was even fortunate enough to celebrate a hole in one twice in his lifetime.

Spending time with his family was also important to him. He especially loved being a grandfather and great-grandfather.

Buck was a member of the Grant United Methodist Church for many years.

Buck will be remembered for the love for his family, his sense of humor and his smile. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Buck is survived by his wife, Vada; son, Steven “Brent” (Barbara) Jewell, of Buckley; daughter, Claudia (Phil) Harris, of Wisconsin; foster daughter, Judy Vieux, of New York; grandchildren, Steven (Karen), Stacey (Curtis), Danielle (Bob), Melissa, Alex and Daniel (Tammy); great-grandchildren, Adam, Steven, Sierra, Glynnis, Hannah, Lydia, Tim and Caspar; great-great-grandson, Gabriel; brother, Claude (Karla) Jewell, of Buckley; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Buck was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughters, Stephanie Pierce and Stasha Kastenschmidt; granddaughter-in-law, Tina Harris; brother, Ethard Jewell; and sisters, Marvella Davison and Bonita Zalud.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., with a the service beginning at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at the Grant United Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions in memory of Buck may be directed to the church.
