---- — KALKASKA — Eleanor M. McCool, age 91, passed away peacefully at her home in Kalkaska on Monday, Sept. 16, 2013. She was born on Feb. 17, 1922 in Fife Lake to the late John and Marie (Lund) Birgy.
Eleanor married Foster McCool on Feb. 15, 1943 in Flint. They made their home in Oliver Township where they raised six wonderful children. Eleanor graduated as a registered nurse from Hurley School of Nursing in 1943. She worked at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center, Traverse City State Hospital and Mercy Hospital of Grayling as well as the Commission on Aging in Kalkaska after her retirement.
She was a member of the Helping Hands Club in Oliver Township. Eleanor loved flower gardening, crossword puzzles and bird watching. She was the family matriarch and historian. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Eleanor is survived by her devoted husband of 70 years, Foster; her loving children, Judy (Ron) Finger of Minneapolis, Karin (Van Delisle) McCool of Chicago, Lynda (John) Prokup of Marco Island, Fla., Sandy (Justin) Straksis of Detour, Mich., Allan (Christine) McCool of Kalkaska, and Lori McCool of Farmington, Mich.; six cherished grandchildren; 11 precious great-grandchildren; and her dear sister, Carol (Walt) Richards of Wayland, Mich., sister-in-law Eleanor VanZyll, brothers-in-law, Max and Rex (Jean) McCool; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Leonard and sister Ileene.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 at the Spencer Church of Christ with Elder Ron Finger of the Community of Christ, officiating. Visitation will be held for the hour preceding the service.
