LAKE LEELANAU — Robert "Bob" Meeker, 81, of Lake Leelanau, passed away Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Bob was born Feb. 27, 1929, in Troy, Ohio, the son of David and Laura Meeker. In 1962, he married Helga Horlacher of Munich, Germany.
Bob attended Troy High School and continued his education at College of Wooster, Ohio. He received a Bachelor of Science in Physics before joining the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He then finished his education at MIT, Boston.
After graduation, Bob began his career at Hobart Corporation in Troy, Ohio. He became Senior Vice President and Group Executive in 1975, and in 1981 he was appointed President of International Operations.
Bob was a lifetime Rotarian, a board member of Leelanau School and College of Wooster, and a charter member at Munson Medical Center. He was an All-American football player, a wooden boat and antique car enthusiast, skier, Indian dancer and windsurfer.
In addition to his wife, Helga, Bob is survived by his son, Robert; daughter-in-law, Aimee; and two grandchildren, Ella (5), and Lars (3), all who reside in Traverse City.
He was preceded in death by his two brothers, David B. Meeker and Dr. Walter B. Meeker.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau. Burial will immediately follow the service in St. Mary's Cemetery, Lake Leelanau.
