GLEN ARBOR — Margaret Ellen Gass, 96, of Glen Arbor, passed away on Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at Munson Hospice House. Margaret was born on Aug. 14, 1917, in Midland, the daughter of Stephen and Effie (Adriance) Starks.
Margaret received her B.A. from Albion College with honors and a life certificate for teaching. She served as an officer and member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.
Margaret was married for 28 years, lived in Pleasant Ridge and taught in the Ferndale Public School District. She was a pianist and Sunday school teacher at the Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church in Ferndale. She also was a Girl Scout leader and leader trainer.
Margaret was a longtime resident of Glen Arbor and member of the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church. She was the 2007 Grand Marshal of the Glen Arbor parade, being honored as a founding member of the Glen Arbor Kazoo Corps. Margaret also formed the local “Lunch Bunch,” where a group of friends came together to socialize and enjoy area restaurants. She was a member of the Glen Arbor Women’s Club and loved reading, traveling, playing cards and entertaining her many friends.
Margaret is survived by her daughters, Judy Gass and Mimi Gass; nieces and nephews, Steve Starks, Libby Thompson, Cindy Shewmake-Torrey and Hugh Starks Jr.
She was predeceased by a brother, Hugh A. Starks; and sister-in-law, Eileen Starks.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
