---- — GREENVILLE, N.C. — Robert “Bob” A. Buehrer, 83, passed away Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at Vidant Inpatient Hospice Center.

Bob was born in Traverse City and grew up in Leland, where he was a 1948 graduate of Leland High School. Following high school he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War from 1951-1955. After the war, he made a living from 1958-1960 as a commercial fisherman on Lake Michigan. He later made his home in Northport. He retired as the senior vice president of Empire National Bank, where he served the community from 1961-1991 as a “country banker.” While in Northport, he served the community in various capacities including village council president and as a member of the hospital board for 14 years. One of his many accomplishments as the village council president was being able to expand the local harbor. He was also proud of being the 1969 winner of the 1st (and last) Annual Underwater Car Regatta at the Northport Harbor.

After retiring and being a snowbird down south for a few years, he made a permanent home in Greenville, N.C., in 2002. In Greenville, he served as the adjutant for the American Legion Post 39 and enjoyed watching Post 39 baseball teams play. He was also a member of Salem United Methodist Church and the Methodist Men.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Agnes Buehrer; brother, Fred Buehrer; and sister-in-law, Rosalie.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Harriet Buehrer; sister, Doris Buehrer of Chicago; daughter, Bobbi Beck and husband, Herb of Greenville, N.C.; son, Fred Buehrer and wife, Shelley of Arlington, Tex.; grandchildren, Krista, Michael, and Grant Buehrer; great-grandsons, Dustin Beck and his mother, Amy, and AJ Ange and his mother, Tori; special niece, Cheryl Kucharski and husband, Don of Cedar, Mich.; and family of choice, grandchildren, Troy Milburn and wife, Heather; great granddaughters, Selah, Soryn, and Sarabel Milburn; and a “sister,” Thelma Porter, all of Greenville, N.C.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., today, Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013 at Salem United Methodist Church in Simpson, N.C. Burial will follow at a later date in Northport.
