Mary Lou Haase Patee

BENZONIA — Mary Lou Haase Patee, 91, of Benzonia, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at The Homesteader in Benzonia. She was born March 9, 1922, in Beulah, the daughter of Lenn and Cora Alice (Greene) Caswell.

Mary Lou worked as a beautician at Doris’ Beauty Shop in Beulah. She took a secretarial job with Allis-Chalmers that she very much enjoyed. She then went on to work as the executive secretary to the director of the Interlochen Arts Academy. She worked there for 17 years before retiring in 1984.

Mary Lou was a member of the First Congregational U.C.C. in Benzonia, as well as a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Honor.

In her spare time Mary Lou loved to go bowling and play bingo. Most of all she loved to spend time with her grandchildren, who adored her.

Mary Lou is survived by her five children, Richard (Alma) Haase, of Bradenton, Fla., Linda (the late Doug Jr.) Joy, of Benzonia, Jo Ellen (Kim) Lathwell, of Frankfort, Ron (Sandi Rice) Haase, of Mesick, and Gayle (Jeffrey) Rayle, of Beulah; her foster son, Hwei Ming Twu, of Taipei, Taiwan; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husbands, Edward Haase and Frank Patee; her beloved son-in-law, Douglas Joy Jr.; her parents; and her brothers, Edwin, Earl and Arden Caswell.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah, with the Reverend Daniel E. Furman officiating. Interment will take place in the Benzonia Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of services at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Douglas Joy Jr. Memorial Scholarship, the Benzonia Fire Department Station 5 or to the Benzie Area Order of the Eastern Star.
