TRAVERSE CITY — Robert Welborn Rowland, age 82, of Traverse City, formerly of Clawson, left us peacefully Feb. 15, after a valiant battle with cancer.
He was born Oct. 11, 1930, in Clarksville, Tenn., to Ralph and Eunice Rowland. They moved to Berkley in the ‘40s. On Jan. 28, 1950, he married Doris Moberly, with whom he shared 62 years.
Dad served in the army during the Korean War.
He retired from Detroit Diesel as a millwright after 30 years.
Dad loved to fish on the Jordan River and spent countless hours at his cabin in Charlevoix County hunting and relaxing. He was everyone’s friend and the first one to volunteer to help. He was the caregiver to mom for many years until his own health issues became too great.
Dad is survived by his son, James (Joan) Rowland and Janet (Ron) Patty; grandchildren, Autumn and Makala Patty, Amanda Bain, Derek Mann and Jenelle Kroupa; great-granddaughter, Raina-Lynn Bain; and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his sisters, Etheleen Lock and Regina Wentworth; sister-in-law, Eleanor Moberly; and brother-in-law, Allen (Jean) Moberly.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Rowland; and his sister, Marvel Cornett.
A memorial service to celebrate Dad’s life will be held Sunday, March 10, at 2 p.m., with visitation one hour prior, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Hazel Park. Cremation has taken place.
Donations can be made to the church or Elks Lodge 323 in Traverse City. No flowers please.
Arrangements were entrusted to Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City, Mich.
