Maxine Lazar


HARRIETTA — Maxine Lazar, age 86, of Harrietta, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at Mercy Hospital. She was born on April 30, 1926, to Joe and Eliza "Betty" Kissinger.

Maxine graduated in 1944 in Manton. She attended Blodgett School of Nursing in Grand Rapids from 1944 to 1947, also working as a cadet nurse during this time.

She was married to John B. Loew from 1947 to 1968 and gave birth to six children.

She was an Registered Nurse night supervisor at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac from 1962 to 1973. While there she was the secretary of the business Professional Women of Cadillac. She was also a member of the ladies club in Cadillac.

She married Steve Lazar on Nov. 6, 1971, residing in Harrietta, where she became postmaster relief of Harrietta Post Office from 1976 to 1980 and then delivered the mail from 1980 to 1987.

She was chairman of Harrietta Centennial Committee, editor of the Harrietta Centennial book as well as several cookbooks. Maxine was also a member of Harrietta Civic Club, and Queen Bee of the Harrietta Honeybees, Red Hatters Club and also president of NARFE from 1987 to 2008, as well as secretary of Paul Davis Scholarship and board member of CWTA in Cadillac.

She enjoyed playing the organ in church in Harrietta and Manton, and also many other communities around northern Michigan.

Maxine also enjoyed shopping, gaming, playing music, Bingo and spoiling her great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Steve; children, Steve Loew, of California, Dave (Aurora) Loew, of California, Patti (Philip) Lyon, of Traverse City, Gary (Aminta) Loew, of California, Sue Trofatter, of Kalkaska, and Mike Loew and friend, Maribel Alcazar, of California. She is also survived by a grandson, Solomon Trofatter; great-grandchildren, Ivy and Chloe Trofatter, and Omar Burgin; brother, Jon (Judy) Kissinger, of California; sister, Sandra (Frank) Greenlaw, of Traverse City; nieces, Barb Lazar and Paula Lutz, of Harrietta; and many more nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Richard and James Kissinger.

A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at 10 a.m., from St. Ann Church in Cadillac. Visitation will be held at the Hitesman-Holdship Funeral Home in Cadillac on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
