---- — TRAVERSE CITY — Norman D. Reece, 92, died at home on May 1, 2013, in Leesburg, Fla. He was born and raised in Richmond, Ind.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was assigned to the U.S. Navy, serving in Sicily, Italy and Normandy. During the landing on Sicily Norman received the Legion of Merit award for outstanding courage and complete disregard for his personal safety for rescuing 90 survivors from a bombed LST.

He married Delia Arlene Sanborn on May 19, 1942, in Traverse City; she preceded him in death.

After the service Norman was employed by the Red Mill Lumber Company for 38 years, retiring in 1982.

Upon retirement he and his wife moved to Leesburg, Fla., where they lived until their deaths.

He had a love of bowling, having bowled for 66 consecutive years on a league in Traverse City and on another league in Leesburg, Fla. His other loves were golfing, reading and enjoying his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Delia Arlene; his son, Allen B.; and a grandson, Adam J. Reece. Also preceding him in death were his parents, Clyde and Estella Reece; his stepmother, Mildred Reece; one brother; and four sisters.

He is survived by his sons, Dale E. (Nancy) Reece and Kim R. (Susan) Reece, both of Traverse City; daughter, Eilene M. Reece, of Leesburg, Fla.; and Norman’s sister, Frances Considders, of Casselberry, Fla. Norman was very proud of his seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, plus numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will held later this summer.
