Arthur John Clark

TRAVERSE CITY — Arthur John Clark, 89, of Traverse City, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, May 7, 2013, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.

Born May 4, 1924, in Malinta, Ohio, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Viola A. (Erford) Clark. On June 18, 1949, in Junction, Ohio, he married the former Joan A. Willitzer.

Art proudly served his country during World War II with the United States Navy.

He was a longtime member of St. Francis Catholic Church, where he volunteered in the Food Pantry, putting together Thanksgiving baskets, helping Sister Katherine, and he served as an usher and participated in Knights of Columbus Council #13 958 activities.

He was a former resident of Arizona. While living in Florida, Art and Joan worked at Disney World for a number of years. They returned to their home town of Traverse City in 2002.

The Clarks enjoyed traveling and visited 41 states delivering motor homes to various dealerships.

Throughout his life Art gave his time and talents generously and enthusiastically to his family, friends and his church community.

Art will be missed for his integrity, sense of humor, generosity and his kind and caring ways.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan A. Clark, of Traverse City; children, William C. (April) Clark, of Coldwater, Patricia J. (Harry) Day, of Traverse City, and Linda (Steven) Slanina, of Crown Point, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Christopher (Kristi) Clark, Jason (Dana) Clark, Tony (Ruby) Day, Matthew (Jessica) Day, Danny Day, Kelli Day, John Slanina, Rick Slanina and Kimberly Slanina; five great-grandchildren, Allyson Clark, Megan Clark, Bailey Clark, Hannah Clark and Marilyn Day; one brother, Adelbert (Marilyn) Clark, of Malinta, Ohio; and “special adopted” children, Vern and Donna Korb.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a grandson, Mark Day; and a brother, Robert Clark.

Cremation has taken place. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Friday, May 10, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m., with a vigil service at 7 p.m. In celebration of Art’s life, a funeral Mass will be offered at St. Francis Catholic Church on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at 1 p.m. The Rev. Kenneth Stachnik will preside along with Deacon Rene Hoenscheid. Burial will follow at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

In honor of Art, contributions may be made to Mass Intentions, St. Francis Food Pantry or to a charity of one’s choice.
