Traverse City Record-Eagle
— BENZONIA — George W. Hyde Jr., 64, of Benzonia, passed away Monday evening, April 22, 2013, at Munson Medical Center, after a long battle with heart disease.
Born in Newberry on June 24, 1948, he was the son of George and Ethel Hyde, who along with his infant sister, Ella Marie, preceded him in death.
George attended Newberry High School. Following graduation he attended Michigan Technological University and studied forestry.
Receiving his forestry degree, he then was employed by the Department of Natural Resources and later his father’s logging company.
In 1972 he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he was a Medical Service Specialist.
Following his honorable discharge he once again attended Michigan Technological University, where he received a degree in Registered Nursing. He then attended Lake Superior State University, where he received his BSN and MBA degrees.
After working as a hospital administrator in numerous hospitals throughout the state of Michigan, he then spent his time as the owner of a very successful in-home health care agency, where he used the skills and experience he had learned, along with his compassionate and caring demeanor, to care for severely impaired individuals.
George loved to go camping. He made a point to attend the many festivals our region has to offer. He adored his three granddaughters, and spending time with them gave him the greatest joy. He always had dogs and pets of all kinds. He was a great father, grandfather, son and provider and a friend to all. His laughter, his stories and his generosity will be greatly missed.
George is survived by his sons, Adam Hyde, of Traverse City, and Matthew (Angela) Hyde, of Traverse City; and grandchildren, Alyssa Thornburg, Mattison Hyde and Juliette Hyde.
A celebration of life for George will be announced by the family for close relatives and friends in the days to come.
In lieu of flowers, donations to be used to finalize George’s affairs can be made to his sons, Adam and Matthew Hyde, 2597 Four Seasons Road, Benzonia, MI 49616.
