TRAVERSE CITY — William Mitchell Kimerly, known as “Back Pack Bill,” 67, of Traverse City, born, Aug. 6, 1946, passed away Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at his home.
He was well known and well loved by the homeless community.
He was raised in Grosse Pointe and Leland. He traveled extensively. In 1996 he became a permanent Traverse City resident.
Bill loved the beauty of the outdoors and was in the planning stages of building his retirement home in Leelanau County with his loving daughter.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Charlotte Lynn Mitchell Kimerly Gittner; and his father, Harvey Kimerly, who lived in Grosse Pointe.
Bill is survived by two daughters and two grandchildren.
Cremation will take place. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 30, 2014, at the Grace Episcopal Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the House of Doggs Homeless Fund. Donations may be made at the House of Doggs or Northwestern Bank, both on Union Street.
The family chose Life Story Funeral Home, Traverse City, to handle the services.
