---- — BUCKLEY — John Washington Runyon, 94, of Buckley, passed away April 15, 2013 at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City.
John was born July 24, 1918 in Berne, Ind. to Harry and Martha Runyon. On Nov. 6, 1919 he arrived in Buckley by train with his family where they homesteaded the family farm.
He lived in Buckley and attended Buckley School, graduating in 1937. On September 22, 1941 he married Mildred Ray in Cadillac. In January 1942, he was called to serve in the United States Army during World War II, as a Radio Communications Specialist.
John retired from the Traverse City State Hospital where he worked for 33 years, spending most of his time in the power plant. He also served for 16 years on the Buckley School Board. He was a member of the Cherryland VFW Post 2780 and enjoyed attending Buckley basketball events and was recognized for being the oldest player in attendance last season at the 100 Year Celebration for boys basketball. John was an avid Detroit Tiger fan and watched all the games.
John is survived by his five children, Judy (Gordon) Zoulek, Gene (Diane) Runyon, Duane (Sue) Runyon, Rod (Colleen) Runyon and Marcia (Kevin) Matthews; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister-in-law, Nell Runyon; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and siblings, Alvin, Dorothy, Gerald, Lawrence, Tim, Ellsworth, and Edward.
A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, April 18, at the Covell Funeral Home in Kingsley. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 19, also at the funeral home, with visitation one hour prior.
