Curtis Edward Lather

Traverse City Record-Eagle

---- — BAY CITY — Curtis Edward Lather, 85, loving husband of 45 years, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 6, 2013, in Bay City. Curt was born on May 9, 1927, to Edward G. and Blanche M. (Curtis) Lather in Muskegon.

He spent his formative years in Traverse City, graduating from Traverse City High School.

He served as a Corpsman in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Using the GI Bill to earn a bachelor’s degree in English from Central Michigan University, he put his love of knowledge to good use as a librarian. Curt later worked as executive director of the Bay City Education Association and uniserve director for the Michigan Education Association representing Saginaw area teachers and staff. He served three terms as commodore of the Bay City Yacht Club (1992-1994).

In his later years he became an avid golfer and was looking forward to beginning another season. Curt’s annual Fourth of July barbecue and silent fireworks event was eagerly anticipated by friends and family alike.

His love of life and sailing and passion for fairness and equality touched many lives. He walked the road of tolerance, thoughtfulness, compassion and empathy. He eschewed greed, rejected prejudice and resisted the rawer temptations, but was never afraid to try everything else that life offered.

Curt is survived by his wife, LeRoyce; his son, Judd; his daughter, Brooke; Judd’s wife, Tuyet; their daughter, Anya; their soon to be born son; and his sister, Blanche (Lather) Breithaupt.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Edward Lather.

Respecting Curt’s wishes, there will not be a funeral or memorial service. A celebration of life is planned for the summer.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Saginaw Bay Community Sailing Association (www.sbcsa.org) or the Bay County Public Libraries (www.baycountylibrary.org).

Arrangements are entrusted to Squires Funeral Home, 211 N. Henry Street, Bay City, MI 48706; www.squiresfuneralhome.com.
