Harrison K. Holdredge Died Nov. 20, 2013

TRAVERSE CITY — Harrison K. Holdredge, 88, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully on Nov. 20, 2013. He was born on May 25, 1925, in Detroit, to the late Harrison K. and Cecile A. (Barnhart) Holdredge.

Harrison graduated from Demby High School in Detroit.

Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army and is a veteran of World War II.

He married “the love of his life,” Carol Asmus, on Aug. 27, 1949, and enjoyed 64 years of marriage together while also raising their three wonderful children.

Harrison attended and graduated from the University of Michigan, earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education.

He was inspired to become a teacher in the Detroit Public School system, teaching science and math, and received the highest honor to serve as the principal of Western High School from 1963 until his retirement in 1983, when he and Carol relocated to Traverse City.

Harrison was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Jean (Barney) M. McCombs, of Wicki Wachee, Fla.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; daughter, Linda S. Holdredge, of Grand Rapids; sons, Harrison “Skip” (AeRan) K. Holdredge, of Clearfield, Utah, and John (Carri) A. Holdredge, of Healdsburg, Calif.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Harrison enjoyed carpentry and woodworking, and together they built a vacation chalet on Cub Lake. He was an avid reader and was often seen at the local library. He loved music, had a passion for playing the piano and singing in his church choir. Many summer days were spent hiking and camping with family and friends along the shoreline of the Pictured Rock National Park and trails of the Upper Peninsula.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Central United Methodist Church, Traverse City, with a luncheon to follow. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
