Charles Burnham Fisk

GRAND RAPIDS — Charles Burnham Fisk, age 78, died on Friday, Aug. 9, 2013.

Chuck was born in Oak Park, Ill. After his family moved to Winnetka he attended New Trier and then DePauw University.

He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany in the mid-1950s.

Chuck’s occupation was insurance, and he served as an executive in Chicago, Pittsburgh, Charleston, South Bend and finally, Grand Rapids.

His interest in philanthropy stems from his long involvement as director and executive director of the Seabury Foundation in Chicago. Health care and education were his primary interests. In the early 1970s he was asked to head the steering committee to bring public television to West Michigan.

As his sons grew older he became involved in youth sports. Chuck was a coach, referee, 78er’s Commissioner and board member of the Forest Hills Youth Football League. The Southeast YMCA included him on their original board.

As a summer resident on Crystal Lake all his life, he found many community organizations to support. Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital in Frankfort has a long been of special interest. He served as chairman of the Paul Oliver Hospital Endowment Foundation.

Preceding him in death were his father and mother, Burnham and Martha Fisk; and his brother, Richard Fisk.

He is survived by Barbara, his wife of 50 years; sons, William (Renee) and Stephen (Wendy) Fisk; his sister, Louise Morris (Kimball); and grandchildren, William, Peter, Rachael and Haley.

A memorial visitation will be held Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 2 until 4 p.m. and 6 until 8 p.m., at Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Grand Rapids. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Aug. 16, at 10 a.m., at St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church, 785 Beulah Highway, Beulah, MI.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Chuck’s name to the Anchor and Heart Endowment, c/o Community Foundation, 250 E. Front St., Ste. 310, Traverse City, MI 49684.
